Why Are Domestic US Shipping Costs for Solar Products So High?

Even when shipping from our US-based warehouses, solar batteries may still incur higher freight costs than standard packages. Here’s why—and how we’re working to reduce your expenses:

1. Heavy Weight & Large Size

A single solar battery (e.g., 10kWh lithium-ion) can weigh 100–150 lbs (45–68 kg) and require palletized shipping.

Carriers (FedEx Freight, UPS LTL, etc.) charge by weight and dimensions, often classifying batteries as “oversized freight.”

2. Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Requirements

Lithium batteries are regulated by the DOT (Department of Transportation) and FMCSA for ground transport. This means:

Special handling: Certified HAZMAT carriers must be used.

Limited last-mile options: Many local couriers won’t handle heavy lithium batteries.

3. Shipping Method & Zones

LTL (Less-Than-Truckload) Freight: Cheaper for bulk orders but slower (3–7 business days).

Expedited Trucking: Faster but costs 2–3x more (e.g., for urgent commercial projects).

Remote Areas: Deliveries to rural zones (e.g., Alaska, Hawaii, or mountainous regions) incur additional surcharges.

4. How We’re Lowering Your Costs

Free Shipping Thresholds: Orders over $10,000 qualify for free LTL shipping (contiguous US).

Local Pickup Available: Save 100% on freight by collecting from our warehouses in [California].

Bulk Order Discounts: Combine batteries with solar panels/inverters to optimize pallet space.

Pro Tip: Provide your ZIP code during checkout for real-time freight quotes, or ask our team about regional promotions!

When you purchase our installation service, the package will be delivered directly to your door by the installation team and installed on site.

When shipping large solar products (e.g., batteries, PV panels, inverters) within the U.S., several logistics options are available, each with different costs, transit times, and service coverage. Below is a detailed comparison and recommendations for selection.

1. Less-Than-Truckload (LTL) Freight

Best for:

Single or multiple large items (e.g., solar batteries, mounting systems) that don’t fill an entire truck.

Cost-effective shipping with moderate transit times (3–7 days).

Key Features:

Charged by space/weight—ideal for small to medium shipments.

Delivers to commercial addresses (warehouses, job sites) or residences (may incur extra fees).

Forklift unloading available (advance notice required).

Major Carriers:

FedEx Freight

UPS Freight

XPO Logistics

Old Dominion (ODFL)

2. Full Truckload (FTL) Freight

Best for:

Large bulk orders (e.g., full pallets of PV panels or containerized inverters).

Direct trucking to avoid handling delays.

Key Features:

Charged per truckload—ideal for large-scale projects (commercial/industrial installations).

Faster transit (2–5 days), with scheduled delivery windows.

Requires unloading equipment (e.g., forklift).

Carriers:

J.B. Hunt

Schneider National

Local trucking companies (negotiable rates)

3. Last-Mile Delivery

Best for:

Residential or small business deliveries (e.g., rooftop solar systems).

Additional services like in-home placement or installation support.

Key Features:

Focused on local/regional coverage (within cities).

“White-glove” services available (inside delivery, unpacking, installation).

Higher cost, charged per item/service level.

Providers:

Ryder Last Mile

uShip (price comparison platform)

Local specialized carriers

4. Customer Pickup

Best for:

Customers near warehouses or local contractors.

Urgent orders or zero-shipping-cost preference.

How It Works:

Provide warehouse locations (e.g., TX, CA hubs).

Requires appointment and own loading equipment (e.g., forklift, truck).

Advantages:

$0 shipping, same-day pickup possible.

Eliminates transit damage risks.
